NOTICE OF EXTENDED DAY - PROGRAM CANCELLATION

Please be advised that the Extended Day Program operated by the
Ottawa-Carleton District School Board will be cancelled on Friday, November 20th, 2015.
Please be advised that the OCDSB extended day program will not be able to offer full day child care on November 20th, a scheduled professional activity day. The continuing sanctions by OSSTF support staff have made it extremely difficult to ensure an accurate registration process and this creates a serious impact on our safe arrival process. We understand the difficulties this will cause for parents, but cannot proceed when we are unable to assure the safety of all of our students. The cancellation applies to all EDP programs operated directly by the OCDSB. Those sites which are managed by a third party operator will continue to operate. A detailed list of the programs affected by the cancellation is available at http://goo.gl/pfQNcs

    Remembrance Day Ceremonies

We welcome families with military connections to attend our Remembrance Day Ceremonies on November 11. An age appropriate Kindergarten Ceremony will be held from 9 - 9:30 in Gym 1. The Grades 1 - 6 Ceremony will be held in Gym 2 from 9:50 - 10:30Please note that our gym is almost at full capacity with our students and staff.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the poem 'In Flanders Fields' written by Canadian soldier John McCrae. The Vimy Foundation recently launched a campaign called 'In Flanders Fields 100', which aims to see 100,000 students recite the poem on Remembrance Day.

Our school is registered for this initiative and our students will be adding their voices to those of thousands of other students across Canada in honour of those famous words that were penned in May 1915.

    October 27 - Walk/Bike to School Day

Tuesday, October 27 is Woodroffe's Walk/Bike to School Day! It's part of the International Walk to School Month this October. Together, let's work to help students safely walk or bike to school (even take their scooter!), reduce traffic congestion around the school, improve our children's health and reduce pollution. Look out for Ottawa Public Health – they'll be there before the 8:30am bell with giveaways for the kids!

We hope lots of kids (and parents) will get active that day – here's how you can help:

    • Encourage your children (you, too) to walk or bike to school. You could even walk with your child and take a bus to work (routes 87 and 16 are accessible options)
    • Talk to your neighbours and form a walk/bike group from your neighbourhood
    • Park a distance from the school, then walk
Check out this study, which highlights the positive effect of exercise on kids' concentration at school.

Be the change that improves the health of yourself, your children and the community! See you on October 27!

Brought to you by the School Travel Planning Committee.

    Eco School Silver Certification

I am very proud to let our Woodroffe Community know that we have received the Eco School Silver Certification for this school year! A huge congratulations to two of our teachers, Marie-Pierre Desrosiers and Anthony Marchildon-White, who spear-headed this initiative! A big thank you as well, to the entire staff and all of our Woodroffe students for working so hard to protect the environment!  Bravo tout le monde!!

Here is the feedback we received from the Eco School organization:

    Wow,
Woodroffe Avenue Public School! What a fantastic kick off to your EcoSchools journey! It was a pleasure to visit your school and see firsthand the many eco-initiatives that are taking place. It is clear that you have a dedicated and diverse EcoTeam working together to make big changes at your school! It is also great to see such strong administrative support. Your monitoring practices and communication strategies around Energy Conservation are clearly having a powerful impact. Great job on your Energy Walkabout Worksheet and your Classroom Lighting Assessment. You are on track in Waste Minimization. The next step is to encourage students to actively monitor and analyze waste, which will provide insight into waste practices within the school and help  target problem items. The  Walkabout Worksheet and Waste Audit forms can be found by visiting our website (www.ontarioecoschools.org). Your School Ground Greening projects will benefit students, the community, and local biodiversity for years to come. It is unfortunate that your school lost some Ash trees due to the Emerald Ash Borer this year - we are impressed that you are already planning to replace them with more trees in the future. You have submitted some excellent Curriculum examples that clearly demonstrate environmental learning across various grade levels and diverse subject areas. We loved your grade 4 ephemeral art installation submission. Your Environmental Stewardship campaigns have provided students with the opportunity to be ambassadors to the community. Regarding the Waste Free Lunch Challenge: This excellent and effective campaign has been recognized in Waste Minimization. Congratulations on all your achievements this year! It was fantastic to meet some of your team members. Keep up the good work!

A Rare Opportunity to Learn About Truth & Reconciliation

brought to you by Pleasant Park Public & Rideau High Schools

We are very honoured to have Commissioner Wilson be our guest speaker for our 3rd Aboriginal Lecture Series.

Commissioner Wilson has been traveling across Canada for the last 6 years, as part of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission
, witnessing the experiences of Aboriginal people who attended residential schools. These experiences were a result of the government legislation that created the residential school system, which have had a profound negative impact on Aboriginal People, and in turn all Canadians.

Education plays a key role in reconciliation moving forward. It is through education that we will create a better Canada based on greater understanding and respect. We invite all our parents, educators and the public to attend this historic and transformative lecture.

Thursday, May 21, 6 pm  Doors Open & Welcome Ceremony – Lecture Starts at 7 pm
Rideau High School, 815 St. Laurent Road
FREE - Everyone Welcome (Family Oriented)
    Aboriginal refreshments will be served

Kindly register by May 18 at http://pleasantpark.ticketleap.com/trc/
