A Rare Opportunity to Learn About Truth & Reconciliation

brought to you by Pleasant Park Public & Rideau High Schools

We are very honoured to have Commissioner Wilson be our guest speaker for our 3rd Aboriginal Lecture Series.

Commissioner Wilson has been traveling across Canada for the last 6 years, as part of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission
, witnessing the experiences of Aboriginal people who attended residential schools. These experiences were a result of the government legislation that created the residential school system, which have had a profound negative impact on Aboriginal People, and in turn all Canadians.

Education plays a key role in reconciliation moving forward. It is through education that we will create a better Canada based on greater understanding and respect. We invite all our parents, educators and the public to attend this historic and transformative lecture.

Thursday, May 21, 6 pm  Doors Open & Welcome Ceremony – Lecture Starts at 7 pm
Rideau High School, 815 St. Laurent Road
FREE - Everyone Welcome (Family Oriented)
Aboriginal refreshments will be served

Kindly register by May 18 at http://pleasantpark.ticketleap.com/trc/

This Saturday: 4th annual Outdoor Chemistry Magic Show at Carleton University

MESSAGE sent on behalf of CarletonU Chemistry Dept:

We are writing to invite everyone in your school community to our 4th annual Outdoor Chemistry Magic Show at Carleton University. This annual event is part of Science Rendezvous, a national one-day celebration of science with the goal of inspiring Canada's youth to explore and appreciate science.

The show is this Saturday (May 9th) at Carleton University. Below is a description of the show and the details. A flyer that you can distribute as you see fit (email to teachers, parents, etc., post on Twitter and Facebook) is also attached. Please note that our feedback indicates that most visitors hear about this event through schools so we do genuinely appreciate your efforts to help promote this educational, fun, and free event.

The one-hour chemistry magic show is filled with amazing glow in the dark substances, fantastic colour changes, spontaneous combustion reactions, fluorescent minerals, and much more. In addition, families can get their hands dirty with hands-on activities making slime and using liquid nitrogen to make real ice cream. They can also learn about pleasant and not so pleasant smells and the chemistry of wine and chocolate, as well as see some our demonstrations up close.

The Magic Show
When: Dusk (~8:45 to 9;45 p.m.)
Where: Outdoor amphitheatre between Southam and Paterson Halls, Carleton University campus. Directional signs will posted on campus. In case of inclement weather the show will be held indoors in the basement of Southam Hall.

Hands-On Activities
When: 7:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.
Where: Adjacent to the outdoor amphitheatre or in the basement of Southam Hall.

Cost: Free. Donations of cash and non-perishable food for the food bank (suggested donation is $3 or one or two food items per person), as well as donations to fund future activities will be accepted.

Transportation: Parking is available on campus (map, look for buildings SA and PA, located near the bottom left of the map) in lot P1 for a flat fee of $3 for the day. Carleton is also accessible via OC Transpo routes 4 and 7 (note that route 111 does not come to Carleton on weekends) and the O-Train.

Labour Relations Update

MAY 5, 2015 - 8:53 a.m.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) has provided notice of strike action in all Ontario elementary schools beginning Monday, May 11, 2015.  Based on the information available at this time, it is believed that ETFO will be implementing a partial withdrawal of service.  According to media reports elementary teachers will not participate in EQAO testing, will perform limited duties in relation to report card preparation, and will not participate in professional development.  This job action applies to all elementary schools in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, as well as other elementary schools in Ontario.

Based on the information received, parents can expect elementary schools to be open and all classes running as usual.  All extended day programs will operate as regularly scheduled.  The school district will provide more information about the specific services that the union is withdrawing in the coming days.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario strike action relates to 'central bargaining'‎. The school district does not sit at the central bargaining table; all Ontario school districts are represented by the Ontario Public School Boards Association (OPSBA); and the government of Ontario also sits at the table.  At the local level, the school district is continuing to meet with our elementary teachers and Occasional teachers, however this is separate from the 'central table' negotiations.

Annual Talent Show

Our annual talent show for the Children's Wish Foundation will be on Wednesday, May 6 at 11:30 AM for students only and for parents at 6:30 PM at Woodroffe High School.

This year we are helping Marcus a seven year old boy (with a heart condition) reach his dream, which is to go see his favorite soccer team!
JK and SK students will also see a shorter version on Tuesday! We are asking for a toonie as a donation!
